Transfer Betting

Player transfer betting allows you to bet on a certain player (or manager) moving to a certain club. Markets can come in the form of ‘Transfer Specials’, ‘Next Club’, ‘To Stay at Current Club’, ‘Club After Summer Transfer Window’ and ‘Club After January Transfer Window’. These are the main key factors of transfer betting to consider.

Transfer windows dates and meanings.

Transfer windows give football clubs the chance of bolstering their respective squads. This will be the time for the managers, scouts and owners of the clubs to attempt to buy and sell players in order to make their team stronger. However, more importantly from a betting perspective, they also provide great opportunities for punters to profit on the players moving via the player transfer specials betting markets.

The transfer windows in the English leagues happen from 17 May – 9 August and then another window which opens midway through the season which opens 1st January and closes 1st February. In this period a club can sign a player, sell a player, put players out on loan and bring players in on loan. When it comes to managers being sacked or getting a job at another club, this can happen at any point during the year, this is not limited by the transfer window. Players can also extend their contract with the current club they are with at any point during the year and players who are out of contract (Also known as free agents) can sign with a club at any point also.

Top tips and predictions for transfer betting.

Keep an eye on sports news sites
Make sure to check as as possible such as Sky Sports, BBC Sports and The Daily Mirror (Sports Section). Once you begin doing this you will get an understanding of which source is the most reliable to you. It’s important to understand that transfers very rarely just happen in a day. The owner needs to meet the manager, who then needs to meet the player and his agent and so on so forth. But this is very beneficial for us, this allows us time to figure out what might be happening and predict the move.
Look at the football clubs themselves
Club websites and Facebook/Twitter/Instagram pages are always good ways of seeing what the fans of the specific club are believing and what they aren’t. Also be aware of the position of the club, if they are about to get relegated from the Premier league, the likely hood is that they will not be signing a world class player. If you notice that the club has already bought, let’s say a striker, then the chances are that they won’t go and buy another one. There may be some rumours that they would buy players from the same position, but it’s rare and it depends on who they sell.
Further news can be announced
It’s important to not only do some research on transfers but to also keep an eye out on some that could potentially be coming up. There are agents and reporters which you can follow on twitter and other social medias who sometimes have information before the sites do, regarding possible transfers.
Research on players going out
To really be ahead of the game, make sure to check which players may either be unhappy, running out of contract or are currently free agents. A free agent can be snapped up much easier than a player who is currently in his contract. If a player decides to leave a club or is bought/released, then the likely hood is that the club will need a replacement, so keep an eye out on players who may be on their target lists or free agents.
Be aware of the different transfer zones
It’s really key to note that each country can have different transfer window opening and closing dates. Be aware that if a player, say from Spain, who’s window opens later tries to sign for a club in England, however there window is closed, the transaction can still go through as the window in Spain is still open.

This is one of the only betting markets which has actually become limited over the years. The reason being is that certain clubs do not like to have rumours about their current players or players they wish to be brought in, leaked. This information can be classified, and clubs can actually take certain legal action against betting companies who propose ‘false claims bets ‘. So, if you are scrolling through the transfer betting options and you come across a potential bet, this is most likely already a rumoured transfer which has been leaked by either the media or some other source, which makes this perfectly acceptable to bet on if you wish.

Bet365, Betfair, BetVictor, Betway, Coral, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power and William Hill have become to most reliable betting sources for these transfer rumours, mainly due to most of these bookies being the main sponsors of some of the football clubs, which are clearly advertised on some of the kits. We recommend taking a look at these sites before checking any others first to see if there is a common theme around a potential transfer.

It’s also important to note that you can also bet on managers getting sacked. This can be popular and not too much research needs to be done into this. For example, if 6 months into the premier league a club is bottom of the league and not showing any signs of getting out of the relegation zone, the chances are that the club will part ways with the current manager in order to get somebody else in to help them out.  This can be something that you predict, just keep an eye on the clubs social media and news outlets and how the teams who are in bad form are doing.

Deadline Day Transfer Dramas.

  • Benjani to Manchester City – The Zimbabwe International Benjani, didn’t want to sign for Manchester City from Tottenham, however Spurs boss Harry Redknapp insisted he goes as it would be a good move for the player. At the airport Benjani ‘fell asleep’ and missed the flight to the club causing a delay in the negotiations. Luckily the relevant paperwork was signed just in time for the players transfer to go through successfully.
  • Fernando Torres and Andy Carroll – Torres to Chelsea from Liverpool for £50 million seemed to be slightly above the price range at that current time, but Chelsea fans would have been happy regardless as the player himself was insane. Carroll, from Newcastle to Liverpool for £35 million however is a different story. Extremely overpriced and Liverpool fans were not happy at all with the supposed ‘like for like’ replacement. Ironically, both players ended up having miserable careers at both clubs until there short spell ended. Arguably the biggest waste of money deal in the history of the Premier League.
  • Peter Odemwingie to QPR – Unhappy at West Brom, and extremely keen to sign for QPR after finding out there were rumours about him signing for them, he asked West Brom’s chairmen if it was true in which he got a reply that didn’t satisfy whether it was or not. So, Peter took it in his own hands, drove from the Midlands to West London to QPR in order to sign for the club, only to find out that the rumour was false and that the club was not in fact interested in the player. Sure enough, Peter Odemwingie didn’t start a single game that season for West Brom.
